Virginia Barclay - Band Manager

Virginia is serving an LDS misson in  the Cebu/Phillipines Mission.   We miss her and will hopefully be able to muddle through until she gets back!

John Barclay - Band Treasurer/Piper - temp. band manager

John is a son of Dave Barclay and has been playing as long as he can remember.  Not only is he the treasurer, but he is also the keeper of all parts and pieces of uniforms and equipment.  When not playing bagpipes he enjoys playing, coaching, and watching sports.  Two of John's sons (Jeremy and Andrew) are members of the band as well.

 Jim Barclay - Pipe Sgt.

Jim is a son of Dave Barclay  has been playing for so long that he can't remember when he started.   He has always played with the UPB and can tell many fun stories from past band experiences. When he's not piping he enjoys soccer games and fishing.  He frequently goes on fishing trips to Alaska and Argentina and seems to be able to find someplace to fish at every highland games we attend.

 Bruce Barclay - Piper

Bruce has started up the Scarlet and Black Pipe Band in Cedar City.  Visit them at http://scarletandblackbagpipeband.com

 Jeremy Barclay - Piper

Jeremy began learning the pipes from his grandfather (David Barclay) when he was 8 years old. As a member of the Utah Pipe Band for the past 22 years, he has participated in countless parades, performances, and competitions throughout the Western United States and Canada.

He is currently enrolled in the MBA program at Westminster College and works as a Corporate Instructor for SkyWest Airlines. When Jeremy is not working or at school (very seldom), he enjoys spending time with his family, coaching and participating in sports, and playing with the band.

  Andrew Barclay - Piper

I started learning the pipes at a young age from my grandfather, David Barclay, and have played with the band for many years. One of my best piping memories is performing in Brigadoon at my junior high school with my grandfather.

Outside of work and school, I enjoy spending time with my wife and son.  I look forward to playing in the band for many years to come and teaching my son to pipe when he is old enough.
I have been standing in for Dave Phillips as most handsome piper in the band while he is away on his mission.

 Jeff Barclay - Bass drummer

Brandon Barclay - Piper

 DeAnn Goodman - Pipe Major
I have been playing pipes since 1984.  I took lessons from Jerry Chatwin (Payson High School), David Barclay (Utah Pipe Band), and Rob Menzies (Triumph Street Pipe Band).  My band experience includes Payson High School Pipe Band, (I was pipe major my Sr. year), then at SUU with the Scarlet and Black Pipe Band.  After college I played briefly with White Peaks Centennial Pipe Band before finally joining the Utah Pipe Band.
I am currently the pipe major of the Utah Pipe Band and working on getting back into solo competing.
Aside from piping I have a degree in Interior Decorating and I enjoy spending time with my husband Dan and 6 kids, skiing, sailing, reading, needle work, travel,  learning French, buying shoes, and browsing book stores.
I've started writing a book, it should be done by June 2008, ask me about it or go to the link in our link section.

 Thomas Z. McOmie - Piper
I have played with the Utah Pipe Band since 2004.   We have a lot of cool people in the band and it makes trips with the band a lot of fun.  I always loved the pipes so I learned to play them AND chicks dig them. I mean my wife likes them. I took lessons from David Barclay.

My wife's name is Julee and I have a boy named Zera (DeAnn calls him "mini-me" because he looks JUST like me) and a Scottie dog named McHaggis (who comes to parades and competitions occasionally).

I also love to fly fish, build custom fly rods, skateboard, shoot guns and laugh .   I like to think I am a funny guy (I do keep everyone lauging at practice). My favorite band is the Dropkick Murphy's.

In this picture you can see his new Loch Haven pipes, they are so COOL!

 Dave Phillips - Piper
Dave and his wife Myrna are on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Boston, MA area.  We wish them the best and look forward to their safe return.

  Dan Harding - Piper

Dan has been playing the pipes for many years. He enjoys playing for both a fun hobby and to honor his
Scottish and Irish ancestors. He studied locally under Dave Keachie and Andrew Morrill and spent some years
in Southern California studying under Ian Whitelaw.
Dan's claim to fame is that the bagpipes in the movie "The Rundown", starring the Rock, are actually his.
Besides piping, he likes being with family, fishing, and working. He is a cruel task master who enslaved  his own son to type this in a kind of indentured servitude.

Chuck McDowell - Piper

Profession: Enterprise Software Sales - Genesys Telecommunications Laboratories, Inc.

Education: Bachelors of Science - Political Science, University of Utah; Microsoft Certified Professional.

 Cheri Morgan - Piper
I have been playing the bagpipes since 2003.   My son and I take lessons from DeAnn. I have always loved the sound of bagpipes and decided the only way to hear the real thing all the time was to learn to play them myself.

In my spare time I enjoy quilting, cake decorating, reading, and being out doors- in the garden or camping.

  Michael Morgan - Piper
I started learning the bagpipes when I was 10 years old, in 2003.  I am taking lessons from DeAnn Goodman with my mom.  It's a lot of fun to have someone to practice with at home.  When I'm not piping I enjoyjeeping in Moab with my family, reading books, and skateboarding with my friends.  I like being in the band and all the things that we do are really fun.

 Laurel Leishman - Piper
I began piping a little over 20 years ago with some breaks to have 3 kids and get through school.  I learned from Kay Ihara in New Orleans and Dave Barclay here in Utah.  I love playing with the UPB.  In my spare time I work as an architect and occasionally I even cook dinner for my family.

  Matt Earl - Piper
I have officially been playing with the Utah Pipe Band since last July. I began learning on the practice chanter at age eight from my uncle Dave Barclay. I am now continuing my lessons with Andrew Barclay.  I am 14 years old. Things I enjoy while I am not bagpiping are: playing sports, spending time with my family, and hanging out with my friends.  I love playing the bagpipes, and I love performing for other people. My first performance was for my 7th grade culture night.  It was then that I learned Tom and Andy were right about one thing...Chicks really do dig kilts!  I enjoy playing with the band. All of the people in it are a lot of fun to be around.

Jonno Holt - Piper

Jonno is our Canadian import, and we tease him mercilessly, eh!  He took lessons from David Barclay and Jerry Chatwin and played with the Spirit of Alberta in Magrath.  He is currently going to school at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.  He was recently called to the Cape Town/South Africa Mission so he will be leaving us for 2 years, eh.   We'll be glad when he gets back safe and sound so that can play with us again.

Dave Daines - Piper
I have been playing bagpipes for a couple of years. I always loved bagpipe music so one year for Father's Day my wife bought me the practice chanter and lesson. At one point my family also enjoyed listening, unfortunately now when I practice everyone runs and hides and tries to find a quiet spot often closing all the doors around them and my practicing.
I am the overly proud father of 4 great kids. In my spare time I enjoy golf, hiking with my family, biking, and any other outdoor activity. My wife and I also enjoy traveling and have enjoyed seeing many parts of the world together.

Joe Yost - Piper Tenor drummer
Joe started lessons with Dave Barclay on St. Patrick’s Day in 2004, and joined UPB in 2005. Joe’s other habits are camping, hiking, and fly fishing in the spectacular wilds of Utah with his wife and four children. His work trips always seem to land on band rehearsal nights.  Joe’s bagpipes were made by Ashley Boyle, and no, he won’t trade them for your 1868 Henderson’s.

 Carlos Viitanen - Piper
I have been playing  bagpipes for a year.  I absolutely love it! I also play the violin, it was my first instrument.  I've always loved the bagpipes and I had a lot of bagpipe CDs. I just love the sound, and that's why I really wanted to learn to play the pipes. DeAnn Goodman is my teacher. She's awesome!
I play football for the Lehi Pioneers. I've been playing for 4 years. I've played everywhere on the offensive and defensive line (except center) and I've played fullback.  Next year, I want to try out as a tight end. My favorite team is the BYU football team.  I love BYU and I want to attend there and play football.  I also like the Green Bay Packers, Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles, San Fran 49ers, Utah Jazz, and Utah Blaze.  My favorite movies are Fly Boys, Saints and Soldiers, Saving Private Ryan, Remember the Titans, We Are Marshall, Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings, and Braveheart. Sheesh! I like reading too.  I like to listen to the radio. I love country and rock music, and my favorite bands are Rascal Flatts, Chevelle, Dropkick Murphys, Stratovarius, and Breaking Benjamin. I also love the outdoors, and I like to go fishing, camping, hiking, and backpacking.

 Tom Rather - Piper
I started playing pipes with Dave Barclay in 1993.  He tutored me for 10 years.  I Participated in many grade 3 and 4 solo and band events.  I enjoy spending time with my family, horseshoeing, and ranching.

 Steve Johnson - Piper
I began piping with Dave Barclay and his sons when I was 12 yrs old.  I have enjoyed playing with the Utah Pipe Band for over 40 years now.  I have made many wonderful friends in this band and have traveled all over the U.S.  I enjoy flyfishing and spending time with my family.

Benson McKay - Piper
I was inspired to play the bagpipes after watching Braveheart and learning that I have Scottish ancestry on both my mom and dad's side of the family. I started learning to play the bagpipes from Don Smith with White Peaks when I was 14 years old. I then played for Payson High Pipe band for my Junior and Senior year.
I am a Combat Engineer for the Army National Guard and went to Germany to do IED reaction and rout clearance with my platoon. After a mission for the LDS church I plan on going to BYU to take their film program and commission with the ROTC. I want to be an Army Ranger, and after I retire form the Army, I am going to be a film director. My all time favorite movies are; Jaws, Saving Private Ryan, Psycho, Braveheart, and The Godfather part I and II. My other favorite movies are; Jurassic Park, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Schindler's List, War of the Worlds(2005), Pan's Labyrinth, The Sixth Sense, Hide and Seek, Beowulf, Band of Brothers, and Cloverfield. I want a german shepherd named Maximus, a black lab named Beowulf, and a nile monitor named Reptilicus(like the 1961 movie). I love making movies, building World War II models, building Legos with my brothers, paint balling, and playing the didgeridoo. I like movie soundtracks and Rachmaninoff. I will never again go off road on ATVs.
Benson has recently been called to the Birmingham, England Mission.  He too will be leaving us for two years and we look forward to his return!

Jason Minert - Piper

Emily - Piper

Camilla Staker - Piper

Gary Finnegan - Piper
I have been playing the pipes for more than a year. Before that I spent
one year practicing on the practice chanter. Andrew Barclay introduced me
to the bagpipes, and ever since he has been patiently trying to instruct
me.

Outside of bagpiping, I enjoy spending time with my wife and our son. When
I am not at home, most of the time I am at the University of Utah, working
on my PhD in astrophysics. If you dont believe me just ask me what IC 443
SNR, Crab SNR, and gamma-rays have to do with each other

Don Morgan - Piper

  Chuck Acklin - Piper
I began piping when I decided that I needed something to do as I entered my seventh childhood. I have several other interests that keep me active, these include Caving , the National Speleological Society’s Fine Arts Salon, Watercolor and Sketching, Martial Arts, Fly-Fishing, Bicycling, and especially my work; learning the pipes has my captured my interest.

Piping is far from the most dangerous activity I’ve done. It is in the top three most difficult activities I have ever undertaken. Though bagpipes may be the musical instrument of heaven, I am not certain that God intended fingers to have to move the way they must to get music from my pipes.

 Annette Lauts - Tenor Drummer
Well.. I am a cat lover with impecable taste in breeds.  I have 18 to be exact all arabian house sitters.  One has a little scar on his left buttox and iIthink he is my favorite.  He truly is my inspiration when I play my tenor drum.   I call both of them sir Mc friskiess. I started playing about 46 years ago after Mc friskiess told me my piping wasn't up to par. OW! I think Ihave four kids or something like that? I think!

My hobbies include; horseback riding, splunking, rack-o, and lacross.
PS. Mc friskiess wanted me to mention my 65 sunfire that we have just repaced all four blinker fluid recepters.
                             (another Tom-ism)

Jim Box - Tenor Drummer

Brandon Barret - Tenor Drummer

  Claudia Lemone - Tenor drummer/Piper
What a great experience to be a part of an awesone organization as UPB!  I love pipes and drums and have played since 2003.  Dave Barclay Sr. was my mentor and I will never forget his wonderful lessons in music and in life.

Ellie Pack - Tenor Drummer

 Andy Draper - Drum Sergeant

I have been playing with the UPB for almost 2 years. I started playing the tenor drum and had a lot of fun, but the band was short on snare drummers so I decided to learn the snare.   The band is very supportive of the new people while they are learning.
I am married and have 3 kids, 2 dogs (1 Scottie named McKinzie who goes to parades and some competitions with us), and 2 cats. I enjoy long walks on the beach, dinner by candle light, and hard core rock crawling in Moab and other places. MY favorite band is the Utah Pipe Band.
I love being in the pipe band, I think of it as my second family.  They accept me even though I feel I could play the drums better or maybe they just want to make sure my girls will dance with them. Hmm. Either way, being in the pipe band has been a lot of fun, and chicks dig kilts, or at least that is what my wife tells me.

   Justin Crawford - Snare Drummer
I stated playing with UPB in 2005. Prior to joining the band I had played (guitar and bass) in rock bands. I started out on the bass drum and transitioned to snare. I enjoy many kinds of music including rock, metal, industrial, blues, jazz, and classical.
My favorite movies to watch are horror (the bloodier the better) and psycho-thrillers (Session 9 is my favorite so far). Favorite TV shows are Family Guy, The Simpsons, Scrubs, Two and a Half Men and documentaries on history and war.
My hobbies include fly fishing (spin casting is boring), target shooting, paintball, playing and writing music for guitar and hashing out beats and grooves on my sequencer.

Jeremy "Bubba" Workman - Snare Drummer
I've been playing in the band for a year now. I'm glad that I have the opportunity to play with the band. The bag pipes are amazing but the snares are the best part of the whole group.  The dogs that we have marching with us out the best ever. I don't just play the snare I play many different instruments.   My favorite one is the trumpet, I've played it for six years now.  I also want to give my thanks to everyone in the band for letting me be a part of it.

 Julie Earl - Dance Instructor

 Ashley Earl - Dancer
I have been dancing ever since I was able to walk. My teacher is my mom, Julie Earl. My first performance was for first night at the tabernacle when I was 2 1/2 years old. I danced with my mom and other dancers doing some of my own choreographing throughout the middle, but ending at the same time they did.
When I was six years old I went to Arizona to compete. I won eight gold medals there. I still continue to dance and I am very excited to compete this year.
When I am not dancing I enjoy hanging out with my friends, shopping, talking on the phone, and going to Jamba Juice! I love to do performances and parades with the band.

 Alex Draper - Dancer
I have been dancing since I was four years old.  So 8 years now. I love to compete at the Scottish Festivals, and have won many metals and a trophy. My most recent was the trophy at the Utah Scottish Association games at Thanksgiving Point.  I have been dancing for the Utah Pipe Band for about 5 years now, and I love it. I like to be in the Parades.
I am in 7th grade. I like to hang out with my friends and listen to the radio. I am always on the phone talking to my friends

 Zyan Draper - Dancer
I have been dancing since I was four years old too. So 4 years now. I compete at the Scottish Festivals. I have won some metals. I broke my femur a few years ago and had to stop dancing for awhile. It took me sometime to get the strength back in my leg. I have been dancing for the Utah Pipe Band for about 2 years now and I too love it. I love to be in the Parades!!
I am in 3rd grade. I love my Heely’s and my Tomacachi.

 Stephanie Tippets - Dancer
I started dancing when I was 11 years old. I have been in the band since I was 12.  I won the dancing trophy at the Mesa, AZ games along with many others. I am now 20. I no longer compete. Because I am working and in film school I don’t get to go to as many Utah Pipe Band performances and parades as I used to. But I still love the band and support them as much I can.
