DeAnn Goodman - Pipe Major
I have been playing pipes since 1984. I took lessons from Jerry Chatwin (Payson High School), David Barclay (Utah Pipe Band), and Rob Menzies (Triumph Street Pipe Band). My band experience includes Payson High School Pipe Band, (I was pipe major my Sr. year), then at SUU with the Scarlet and Black Pipe Band. After college I played briefly with White Peaks Centennial Pipe Band before finally joining the Utah Pipe Band.
I am currently the pipe major of the Utah Pipe Band and working on getting back into solo competing.
Aside from piping I have a degree in Interior Decorating and Personal Fitness training. I also enjoy spending time with my 6 kids, skiing, sailing, reading, needle work, travel, buying shoes, and browsing book stores.
I really like gummy bears, pear flavored jelly-bellies, chick-flicks, and the sound/smell of rain.
Thomas Z. McOmie - Piper I have played with the Utah Pipe Band since 2004. I play a set of Loch-Haven pipes. We have a lot of cool people and some of my family in the band like Vanessa, Andy, Stephanie, Alex, and Zyan. It makes trips with the band a lot of fun. If we can go fly fishing, we do. I have always loved the pipes so I learned to play them. I took lessons from David Barclay, who I look up to a lot. He was a kind and humble man and a true friend. My wife's name is Julee. We have a boy named Zera and a Scottie dog named McHaggis (who comes to parades and competitions occasionally). I also love to fly fish, go wheeling, build custom fly rods, skateboard, shoot guns and laugh. Some of my favorite bands are the Dropkick Murphy's and The Real Mckinzies. |

In my spare time I enjoy quilting, cake decorating, reading, and being out doors- in the garden or camping.
Michael Morgan - Piper
I started learning the bagpipes when I was 10 years old, in 2003. I am taking lessons from DeAnn Goodman with my mom. It's a lot of fun to have someone to practice with at home. When I'm not piping I enjoyjeeping in Moab with my family, reading books, and skateboarding with my friends. I like being in the band and all the things that we do are really fun.
Matt Earl - Piper
I have been competing with the Utah Pipe Band since July 2006. I began learning on the practice chanter at age eight from my uncle Dave Barclay. Things I enjoy while I am not bagpiping are: playing sports, spending time with my family, and hanging out with my friends. I love playing the bagpipes, and I love performing for other people. My first performance was for my 7th grade culture night. It was then that I learned Tom and Andy were right about one thing...Chicks really do dig kilts! I enjoy playing with the band. All of the people in it are a lot of fun to be around.
Jonno Holt - Piper
Jonno is our Canadian import, and we tease him mercilessly, eh! He learned to pipe from David Barclay and Jerry Chatwin and played with the Spirit of Alberta in Magrath. He is currently attending school at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
Joe Yost - Piper
Joe started lessons with Dave Barclay on St. Patrick’s Day in 2004, and joined UPB in 2005. Joe’s other habits are camping, hiking, and fly fishing in the spectacular wilds of Utah with his wife and four children. His work trips always seem to land on band rehearsal nights. Joe’s bagpipes were made by Ashley Boyle, and no, he won’t trade them for your 1868 Hendersons.

I have been playing bagpipes for a year. I absolutely love it! I also play the violin, it was my first instrument. I've always loved the bagpipes and I had a lot of bagpipe CDs. I just love the sound, and that's why I really wanted to learn to play the pipes. DeAnn Goodman is my teacher. She's awesome!

Garth Fielding II - Piper
Garth Fielding II has loved the sound of bagpipes his entire life.
In November of 2006, he had the opportunity to go to Edinburgh, Scotland for a vacation with his wife for 3 days. He toured the highlands of Scotland, had his picture taken sitting on the walls of Urquhart Castle (on the banks of Loch Ness) and saw Nessie. The last day he was there, he walked 1.5 miles to a shop that made bagpipes and said I'm here to buy a set of bagpipes. The owner said they were a made to order shop where you had to pre-order off the Internet. He was about to walk 5 miles in the other direction when the owner said, "Hold on" and started grabbing pieces out of every box laid out for other customers. He pieced together a set right there. It took Garth eight and a half months after that to find a teacher, but in July of 2007 he started his piping journey.
Don Morgan - Piper
I consider it an honor and a privilege to be associated with the Utah Pipe Band. To be honest, the thought of being a band member arose with my first lesson with David Barclay. Like many who were taught by David, I loved the man dearly and deeply miss him. David Barclay was one of the kindest, caring men I've known in my life time. Following David's death, I was taught by another very dear friend, Dennis Mc Master. Currently, I'm most fortunate to have another splendid teacher, Cheri Morgan, she is also a member of the Utah Pipe Band and a dedicated piper. So, you can see that I've been taught by the best and have no excuse for poor technique.
I play pipes because I love the music and to honor my Irish, Scotch and Welsh ancestors. I have pipers and drummers in my ancestry going back many hundreds of years. I also play other instruments, the Irish Flute (transverse), the Whistle, the Boehm Flute, The Scottish Small Pipes, and the Uilleann Pipes (Irish Pipes).
I'm married, have two grown children and two beautiful grand daughters. I am currently, and have been a law enforcement officer for over 35 years; I've seen it all and have the T-shirt to prove it. I've worked as an officer on the streets as well as in administration; I enjoyed every minute of it. At present I'm a Mental Health Therapist for the Utah State Prison and treat men with serious substance abuse and mental health issues. My under graduate and my graduate training are in counseling and that is the work I love the most.
